Claw Basket
The tip gets sharp. The claw keeps growing.
A cat scratches to strip the worn outer layer off its claws. On a vertical post it hooks the point and pulls down — so the point gets sharpened, and the rest of the claw is never touched.
And there is one claw that never touches anything at all: the dewclaw, sitting higher up on the inside of each front leg. It never reaches the floor. It never reaches a scratching post either.
Which is why the post gets used every day, and the sofa still gets shredded.
Rope that pulls back
The basket is woven from cotton rope with roughly the resistance of tree bark — enough to grip, enough to drag against.
The claw sinks in and pulls along its whole length, not just the point. And because the wall curves inward, the paw has to splay outward to find purchase — which brings the dewclaw into contact too.

They scratch it because they sleep in it
A scratching post gets used when the cat remembers it is there. A basket gets used every time it climbs in and stretches out — and that is what the cushion is for. It is not the selling point. It is the reason the rest works.
Where to put it: next to the sofa arm, the door frame, the corner of the rug — wherever the damage already is. Cats scratch to mark territory as much as to groom, so the spot matters as much as the object.
